In western states, maternity colonies commonly run May through August. Southern Southern California’s early heat can shift activity earlier; northern Southern California foothills can run later. Why early sealing is dangerous
Pups cannot fly for weeks after birth. Sealing active maternity roosts can strand young in attics and living spaces, creating odor and emergency call-backs. Humane practice waits until young are volant or limits work to non-active openings.
What we can still do during maternity
Inspection, photo mapping, sealing secondary non-active gaps, and scheduling priority for the first safe exclusion window are often available. You are not stuck waiting without a plan.
Fall and winter still matter
After pups fly, exclusion can proceed. Fall swarming and winter use of heated structures still generate Southern California calls—year-round inspection remains useful if you hear activity.
