Is it safe to evict bats now?
California bats are protected, and excluding them while flightless pups are in the roost can trap the young inside. Pick a month to see where it falls.

Borderline month. Inspect first.
In October, pups born this year are usually flying, but late colonies happen. A dusk check helps confirm the timing before exclusion.
General guidance, not legal advice. Timing depends on the species and microclimate, and is confirmed by inspection.
